A chalk loop is drawn around the Euromast in Rotterdam, covering an area spanning Het Park
and the Maastunnel building that connect the South and North of the city. The chalk line crosses
over different allocated zones and surfaces, including recreational areas, bike lanes, walking
paths, roads and national monuments, all of which would be affected by a high end building
project proposed to privatise part of the area and wall off the park. While not visible as a whole
from any one position, the chalk line is viewable in different parts, and aims to draw attention to
the area and zoning laws that allow public space being removed from the city. The title Limelight
refers to stage lighting in theatres and musical halls before the advent of electrical lighting––with
stagehands directing a flame at a cylinder of quicklime (like chalk, a product of limestone) to
generate a white burning light to illuminate action.
